How does your daily routine go?

My day starts with getting the kids ready for school which includes making breakfast and lunch. Once kids are off to school, I like to have a few moments of my own quietness whether it is fixing myself a good breakfast, reading up the news, replying emails,  and/or jogging by myself along the beach.  I usually leave the house around 10:00 am for work. I have my own private practice and I also work for LA County Area of Aging.  I spend my workday seeing clients, teaching classes and staying up to date on the most current information on nutrition and wellness.  I pick up my kids around 4 pm for their after school activities. The evening is spent mostly making dinner, going over kids’ homework, and making sure they practice piano and read.

After my little ones go to sleep I write reports for my work, check in with social medial and return emails. Sometimes, I simply  cuddle up with a cup of hot tea and a good book!  It’s a long, but exciting day without a dull moment. I love my family and my work!  They feed my soul!

Do you still find any time for yourself?

(What did you do the last time you had free time for yourself)

I truly enjoy exercise, whether it is jogging, swimming, hiking or biking.  I try to fit an exercise routine into my busy schedule at least 3 times a week.  Exercise keeps me in shape, but more importantly, it keeps my mental wellbeing in check.  Cooking is in my blood.  I start experiment with food when I was 10 years old and fancied myself as a TV cooking host.  So, in my spare time, I enjoy cooking for my friends and family and also experiment new recipes.  Books are everywhere in my house.  Finding the time to read in today’s busy lifestyle is hard, but I try to read whenever I can.   Right now I am reading a book called The Fortune Cookie Chronicles, which explores the cultural, social, and culinary history of American-Chinese Food.

What is the funniest thing your children ever did?

My kids are full of imagination and are very free-spirited.  So many cute things they did that put a smile on my face.  Some examples include making their own puppet show and show tickets out of laundry basket and scrap paper; using a real pump to pump air to their toy cars; writing their own story about Jedi, princesses, and stuffed animals having a birthday party.

What is the best parenting advice you ever got?

Honestly, I’ve received so many wonderful parenting advice that I took to my heart very dearly.  But if I had to pick one, I would say helping our kids to maximize their own potential.  Each child is unique and every person has a special gift to offer to this world.  Our job as parents is helping our kids identify this special TALENT and align it with proper SKILL SETS  and  MORAL VALUES so that they can make this world a better place.

What are your best parenting resources?

It takes a village to raise kids.  My girlfriends are my best resources.    They offer me non-judgmental advise and help raise my children by offering knowledge and resources that I cannot possibly offer to my kids.  For example, I have a girlfriend whose husband is a jazz musician and the way he explains music to our sons is very different than their piano teacher.  He made it so fun, interactive, and engaging.

What is your most favorite children's book? why?

The Ugly Vegetables by Grace Lin, of course!  I love it because it is about fruits and vegetables.  But more importantly,  it is a book that celebrates individuality, diversity, family, and community.

Does your have any routine or ritual? What are they?

(such as habits or your family does together)

Every Sunday, I serve my family a very nice brunch at my own home.  I go elaborate with foods like home-made waffles with strawberries and banana topping and  hot chocolate made with Belgium chocolate.  Sometimes I also make a traditional Chinese or Japanese breakfast placed in a nice bento box.

A talent that you wish your children possessed is…

I try to give my kids a well-round education package by supplementing classes that are not offered by the public school on a regular basis.  One thing that I am adamant about is playing an instrument  well enough to entertain themselves or others.  I don’t need my kids to win any musical competition, but do hope that they develop a deep appreciator for arts and music no matter what career they decide to choose in the future.

What present will you give your child on his/her 10th birthday?

I love traveling and would like to take my kids to see the world wit me!   Since my oldest son is currently enrolled in a Spanish Dual Immersion Program,  it would make more sense to take him to a Spanish Speaking country or island.   Some possibilities include Machu Picchu, Peru: Galapago Islands, Ecuador,   Roatan Island, Hondura, or Barcelona, Spain.

Name a recent children’s book or movie/program you enjoy most. Why is it rewarding?

I introduced my boys to books by Roald Dahl, who was perhaps the greatest modern writer of children’s stories by my standards.  He wrote stories that are neither condescending nor patronizing to children, and hence have an appeal that lasts far beyond childhood.  I also find his writing style very descriptive yet clean and not convoluted.  We recently completed several books written by him include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,  James the Giant Peach, and BFG. The rewarding part of this experience is that my kids now have developed a full appreciation for high quality writing.  Good stories and good writing are timeless!

What is the most impressive thing that happened between you and your childrenlately?

My younger son recently destroyed his brother’s multiple lego sets on purpose.  His brother was so upset that he was crying hysterically.  I told Ryan ( my younger son) that what he did was inappropate  and totally out of proportion!  Not know what kind of punishment would appease my older son, I turned to them and said ”  You guys negotiate.  And let me know what you come up” So, the negotiation process began. First Shawn offered Ryan to be his slave for 1 month.  Ryan turned it down.  Then Shawn offered Ryan to give up his three favorite lego miniatures, and Ryan said no again.  And then I started hearing them talking and laughing at the same time.  Few minutes later, Shawn and Ryan ran up to me and said they have come up with a resolution:  Shawn will hit Ryan’s butts 30 times. What is impressive about this event is my kids have learned the art of negotiation and both were quite happy at the end!  As far as I am concerned, I got myself out of being a referee. It is a win-win!

What inspired you to give your children the names that you did?

I actually did not come up with the names.  My husband named my boys Shawn and Ryan because of he likes the way they sound and the meaning of the names.  Both are Irish names but are pretty easy for Chinese to pronounce.

If you could change one thing about the world today that would make it better for your children what would it be?

Kindness.  We were just nicer to each other and be more respectful, trustworthy, this world would be a better place.

How have you changed since you had children?

(give examples in terms outlook, life planning, interaction with your spouse, family and friends, even your personality)

The biggest change that parenthood did for me is the ability to love unconditionally. I love my kids for who they are, which can sometimes be an act of constant struggle.

What is your greatest reward as a parent?

(probably should be last question as it summarize almost everything)

I have the ability to make them wanting to be a better person.  I do that by practicing active listening with my heart and ears and guide them through the process of conflict resolution.

If you can only share one insight, what would the nutrition advice you have for modern families?

Eat together as a family. To start, don’t worry so much about the quality of meal, just

find the time to eat together and enjoy each other’s company.   Family meal doesn’t

have  to be dinner, it can be at breakfast. If everyone has a crazy schedule, how

about do a big Saturday dinner or Sunday brunch at home once a week.   As

members of the family get accustomed to the meal ritual, use this time to guide

towards  healthier behaviors like eating more fresh fruits and vegetables.
